On 5 December 2016, Food for Soul launched their new community dining service in Modena, named Social Tables @ Ghirlandina.

As the home of Food for Soul’s central office and Massimo Bottura’s flagship restaurant, Osteria Francescana, Modena seemed an obvious choice for a project that allowed us to support our most immediate local community and fight food waste close to home.

This venture is in collaboration with Auxilium Foundation who also provide a long-standing self-service canteen in the heart of Modena offering lunch to paying customers every lunchtime.

With Food for Soul’s support, the canteen now opens its doors every Monday evening to up to 70 local guests who are either homeless or living in vulnerable situations and can now count on evening of good food and welcoming conviviality.

Delicious meals are cooked by chefs from the local association Modena a Tavola using ingredients surplus donated from the town’s central market, Mercato Albinelli, as well as from other local retailers. A dedicated team of volunteers help each week to set the dining room and serve food before they sit down to enjoy a shared meal together after service.

An important aspect of all of Food for Soul’s projects is the use of art and design to add cultural nourishment to the dining experience. So we are excited to have the involvement of two local artists, Luca Zamoc and Luca Lattuga, who are creating an extensive mural for Modena’s dining room. The artwork depicts the tale of San Gemininano – Modena’s patron saint, said to have miraculously protecting the town attack by camouflaging it in a dense blanket of fog. Combining elements of local legend and folklore, it’s a story close to Modena’s heart that can be easily understood and appreciated by the local diners.

The official inauguration of the mural will be 12 May. For images and info on the mural’s progress, visit our dedicated facebook page.
